VB OS Pocket into a AI2. Can I...
« on: August 29, 2010, 07:40:27 AM »

Can I make an AI2 with the pocket diaper pattern by leaving out the pocket (of course leaving a hole to turn right side out) and putting snaps on the soaker to attach on the outside rather than stuffing?

Can I use  suede cloth (or microfleece) or do I need to use something absorbant for the inside layer? (will the wicking fabrics have nowhere to wick to?)

I saw someone had made an AI2 from the pocket pattern but she is using 2 layers of an absorbent fabric inside and putting an extra layer of PUL on the inside of the tabs.  Is this necessary?

It looks like there is someone doing something similar at http://www.diapersewing.com/quick_dry_aio.htm

She's reinforcing the snaps with a scrap of fabric.

Does it make more sense to put the snaps for the snap on soaker in the back when making a one size diaper?

I'd love to hear from anyone who's tried this sort of thing...

I make my AI2 from the fitted pattern but I think it would be basically the same idea if you use the pocket pattern.  I wouldn't recommend using a layer of suedecloth or microfleece in the body if there are any absorbent layers because it makes it hard to get them dry when between the MF and PUL.  I would think you could make the absorbent layers just in the soaker if you trifold it so it will open up in the wash.  It would be similar to a tri-folded prefold laid in a cover or like your pocket diaper.  I like a few layers in the body then you have either a little more absorbency total or a little less in the soaker, but then I haven't tried one that is a tri-fold soaker.  Give it a try and let us know how it turns out.

To clarify, Are you saying I should not layer: PUL, absorbent material (flannel, zorb etc.) and then microfleece?

I wasn't planning on doing a trifold soaker, I just was looking at the fact she didn't have anything in the main part of the diaper besides PUL and microfleece. I ordered some zorb, and expect that it might be too thick for a trifold (I guess I'll know more when it gets here)

Right, it is very hard to dry when the absorbent layer is in between a layer of PUL and a layer if MF.  You should be able to do a regular soaker instead of a tri-fold...it would just take longer to dry than if you split the layers up b/t the body and soaker, more like a regular AIO for drying time I would think.
