sew your own diapers

Has anyone ever tried sewing a pocket diaper with gussets, but without using an FOE casing? I'm trying to make some pockets for a newborn due in dec and would really like to add gussets to help contain messes. I'm just not as fond of the idea of having to put FOE around the whole diaper. . .

I just made a pocket with gussets, but I did use FOE. I made the gussets football shaped and folded them over. Then I made a seam to hold 1/4 inch elastic and threaded it through. That way the soft side of the PUL is touching her skin.

Is there a particular reason you don't like the FOE? I've found it much faster and easier after practicing.

Also, pockets for a newborn might be hard to stuff since it will be narrower than your hand. My baby is 2 months and I'm just starting to make pockets after using prefolds for the newborn size. I was skeptical at first, but they worked out really well.

securtis, those diapers are great!!  i so wish we could use foe in this house! because i would totally "need" to make some of those diapers! nice job!

No particular reason for not wanting to use FOE. I'm just a newbie at sewing in general, and it seems to show mistakes more than other methods.
