Cover without FOE

Cover without FOE
« on: August 01, 2010, 12:09:46 AM »

I'm not sure that I even want to make covers (when I simply sew more AIOs I may not use any prefolds anymore), but IF I were to sew some covers . . . Could I use the Very Baby AIO pattern to make a cover out of PUL and no foldover elastic? How would I do it? Thanks.

Here's a website that shows you how to make covers without FOE, you need a special binding foot for your sewing machine though, lots of lower quality machines don't come with those. I use the FOE now just because it is so easy, and I have a cheap machine. FOE is pretty inexpensive on Very Baby....

Okay, maybe I'll just buy some FOE then.

Could you perhaps sew two pul fabrics together (serge or t&t) with the elastic sandwiched inside?  I just made a fleece cover last week with two layers of that no pill fleece sold at Joann's.  I sewed the elastics using the blind method and serged the edges. I don't know how well it would work but it's a way to get around using FOE.

A million years ago there was a diaper cover made by... oh crud, punkin patch?  I think?  Or Pumpkin Patch?  Yes, I think that's it.  Anyway, it was like Ana describes, kinda like a PUL diaper only without anything absorbent.  Right sides together, stitch around leaving an opening, sew elastic in the seam allowances and then turn right side out.  You could also do PUL + something non absorbent like microfleece or suedecloth.
The Pumpkin Patch covers were topstitched, and I never owned one but they were popular.
FOE is just so darn easy once you get the hang of it, it's all I reach for when sewing diaper covers.  Smiley
