NykiBaby Diaper Pattern
« on: June 29, 2010, 01:43:54 PM »

Ok, so after many questions to all of you wonderful ladies, I think I know what I want to make now!  But help me out here, I'm new, and I have a few more questions!  I like this NykiBaby Pattern on the VB website (under the diaper resources page, patterns for purchase) but I don't know what materials it requires.  Is that PUL on the outside with some kind of absorbent layer on the inside, like fleece?  I like all the pretty patterns they show for examples, but I can't tell if that is print PUL or knit with a layer of PUL in between.  I'm such a novice that I just can't tell by looking at it, and I'd like to know what materials are required before I purchase the pattern.  Thanks!

First off.. I would post this in the diaper sewing how do I section. Smiley More people would probably see it there.

Second.  It would be PUL on the outside.  I know a lot of ladies can get printed PUL.. Pretty cool stuff too!  I have a few small pieces of printed PUL for makign embelished tabs with as soon as my sewing machine gets fixed. Smiley

Third.  Fleece is not absorbant.  It would be a repeling or wicking layer depending on what type of fleece it is.  That said, cotton fleece, hemp fleece and bamboo fleece are absorbant.... funny I know....  If I remember hearing this right the Nikibaby pattern can be made however you want.. as a pocket, AIO etc...

SO.. If I am unserstanding you correctly.. You want to make pocket diapers. ???  If so you would need to get PUL and some type of wicking fabric.  Suedecloth, microfleece, microchamois.....  You would need snaps for closure and rise adjustments and elastic for the legs etc.

If you are doign pocket diapers you would also need to get something to stuff them with.. A lot of people use prefolds or else make trifolds.... either way... For my NB I am using washrags whenever he is in a OS pocket diaper..... absorbant enough since he has to be changed ALL THE TIME anyways. Smiley

Hope that helps!

Ha ha!  Thanks Cristy!  Yeah, I thought maybe people on this forum might be familiar with the pattern in question.  I'm so new to diaper sewing and I've been on the other forum (you just answered on of my other questions, yea!), but I'm really struggling to sift through all the stuff on the internet and figure out what I need, what's easiest, what's cheapest.  I am doing this to save money, so buying expensive fabric is not an option.  I'm not getting really expensive, top of the line cloth diapers, I've just bought Gerber prefolds for $12/dozen.  Are they the best?  No, but they work.  So with the pocket diaper, I want to make tent can be used for a project and go figure out which one is most economical.  I'm going crazy!!!  And I can't find anything in the store, so I've got to order it online, which I hate because I like to touch and feel and see the color in person.  But I digress.....

Wow, I got off topic!  I was going to ask, to clarify, that I need a layer of PUL on the outside, a layer of a wicking material to keep baby dry on the inside, and then stuff the pocket with a soaker (is that what you call it?) or cloth diaper made from the absorbent material...is that right?

And just wondering, is there a place on this forum, or do you know of another website, that kind of lists these materials?  Like which ones are good for absorbency, which ones for wicking, etc?  That would be very helpful to me!

Yes, you want a layer of PUL on the outside, microfleece or microchamois on the inside for wicking, and then you stuff the pocket with an insert (this can be a prefold, microfiber towels, washcloths, anything that is absorbent!).

You might want to try this link (hope it works):  http://www.zany-zebra.com/diaper-fabric.shtml.   It will give you the lowdown on lots of diaper fabrics and what they're best used for.  Also, if you go to the homepage, there's tons of other info, like FREE diaper patterns!!   cheerful
