What kind of snaps & snap tool?
« on: June 28, 2010, 12:06:54 AM »

I really like the VB standard snaps, but I just can not afford the snap set.  I'm a SAHM on a very tight budget, and I'm making my own CD to save money mostly.  The VB website says this about the standard snaps:
Quote
Standard Snaps have a typical size and shape that you may be used to seeing on cloth diapers already. They can most likely be used in the same die set/snap press set up as similar plastic snaps on the market. (If your press is from another retailer, please order a sample prior to ordering many snaps to be sure they work with your press).

Is anyone familiar with the KAM snap pliers?  http://www.kamsnaps.com/Pliers-for-Plastic-Snaps/Pliers-for-Plastic-Snaps-p116.html

Or the SnapSetter from Snap Source?  http://www.snapsource.com/store/products.php?categoryName=The%20SnapSetter&categoryParentName=Attaching%20Tools

Do you know if these tools work with VB standard snaps, or if they are good products?

Also, what kind of snaps do y'all like the best?  I've sewn a CD with velcro, but this will be my first attempt at snaps, and I want to know that I'm spending my limited budget on a good product before I buy.  Your help and expertise would be so greatly appreciated!

I bought the snap setter back when I started making diapers. I didn't like it for putting snaps on at all.  And the snaps I did get put on fell off after a couple washes.  So I personally would not recommend the snap setter for diapers.

I went together with my SIL and we bought a snap press to share.  Then the following year we split another one so now we both have one.  Yay!

I haven't used the snap pliers thing, but have heard good things about it.  I am sure someone will chime in on that.

I have the Kamsnaps pliers and have been very happy with them. It's easy and portable, unlike the big press. As far as I can tell, the pliers should work on any standard snaps. The industrial ones would be too heavy to use, but the VB standard snaps should be fine with the pliers.
If you are just making diapers at home for your kids, the pliers are a great purchase!

I have snap pliers purchased from a yahoo group and I really like them.  THey look like the same thing as the kam snap pliers......  And I use the VB standard snaps with them and it works great!

I also used the snap setters and honestly I wouldnt recomend them for diapers....  Kind of a lot of effort to do that many snaps.. I have had a few fall off as well.  I have heard of people having a problem with rust with them... I never did though...

Awesome!  Thank you ladies!  That's what I will do, then.  I'll get the snap pliers (any place to get good ones besides wazoodle?) and then I'll get my PUL and matching snaps from VB.

BTW, I guess it really doesn't matter, but what do you prefer, or are there pros and cons, to using size 16 versus size 20 snaps (standard, not industrial)?

I ordered mine from Kamsnaps.com. I use size 20 snaps. I haven't seen the size 16, but it seems like anything smaller might be too small.

Oops!  Yes, kamsnaps was what I meant, NOT wazoodle!!!  But thank you, securtis!  I am on a couple CD forums and people say they use size 16, but then I see others that use size 20, so I didn't know if there were any big differences...but I think I've seen more people recommend 20 than 16.  Not that there is anything wrong with either, I guess it's just preference.

I use 20....  Dont know if there is really much difference though.  I got my pliers from the yahoo group notionsupply.... I get all my snaps from VB though.  They are really good quality and have held up GREAT for me.  THe one tip that helps me out is for thinner layers.. like the wing snaps a dn front snaps.. I clip off the very tip of the snap prong before I smoosh it.  otherwise there is a bit too much plastic getting smooshed and they dont want to snap together very well.  For thicker layers like in the soaker I dont ever have to clip off though.  The ones that came with the pliers dont go through thicker layers very well and honestly the VB ones are better quality in my mind...I use the ones that came with the pliers for pantyliners and such since there are less layers to go through the wings of mama cloth....  Hope that helps!

I'll chime in and say that I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE Very Baby's industrial snaps.... they are awesome! A little more pricey, but the quality is amazing. VB's snap press is also awesome. I recommend VB very highly for quality and comparitive pricing
