It absorbs quite a bit of moisture before ever feeling wet, making it ideal for use in diapering. Our 100% wool jersey fabric is a lovely 8 ounces per yard. This fabric is approximately 27" tubular, or approximately 54" wide cut open. Wool jersey needs to be felted and fulled by washing on hot with wool wash (we recommend Eucalan Wool Wash), then drying on hot. Then, the fabric will perform beautifully as a diaper cover, wool longies, or shorties for your baby. Though the wool will perform without felting and fulling, it's best to do so as use over time will cause it to felt up anyway. Good to know: Wool jersey is a single layer wool knit that tends to curl up on the edges. After felting and fulling the wool, it will curl less, making it a bit easier to work with. After you sew it into your diaper cover, pants, or shorts etc. it will no longer curl. It is very difficult to estimate how much yardage you'll loose to shrinkage due to different washing machines and temperatures - so plan on losing 4 - 8 inches just to be safe when planning for yardages. We are told our natural wool takes Koolaid dye and other wool dyeing methods beautifully, though we cannot be held responsible for dyeing mistakes, so be sure to test a small area before dyeing a whole batch. Wash your wool diapering items separately using a wool wash on the gentle cycle. Lay flat to dry. Do not wash using regular detergents as they can strip the natural lanolin from wool. Wool should not be used in making an all in one, as the absorbent diaper layers require different washing care than the wool. |
